The 15 Best Medical Website Designs

People expect to be able to access almost anything online - including healthcare. Patients expect their hospital or medical practice to have a website that doesn’t just include bare-bones information on addresses and hours. Instead, they want the ability to find a provider, schedule an appointment, access medical records, pay their bills, and more.

A medical website shouldn’t just be informative. It must also be secure, HIPAA compliant, and accessible to people with disabilities. The design should also be clean and uncluttered so that it is easy to navigate. If you’re considering building a medical website, our list of the best 15 medical website designs is a great place to start if you are looking for inspiration.

Inclind is a team of website designers and developers who collaborate to provide website development, design, maintenance and support services to clients throughout the United States. We have extensive experience building medical websites, including expertise in the best practices to comply with federal laws and maintain security. Best Practices for Medical Website Designs

A cornerstone of website design is creating a site that functions for its given purpose. For example, a nonprofit organization’s website should typically have ways for people to donate or otherwise get involved in the mission. In the same way, websites for the healthcare industry should always have certain features.

First, healthcare providers are required to keep certain information private under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This includes any data that may be collected through a website, such as information gathered from a user’s search of the site or a patient portal.

HIPAA compliance often means that medical websites cannot use certain tools like Google Analytics. A skilled medical website designer and developer should have the experience and knowledge of what software can and cannot be used - and what security to incorporate to maintain HIPAA compliance.

Second, medical websites must be accessible. Websites in the United States are required under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to be accessible. It is especially critical for medical websites that all users can access their website and the information contained in it.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are a good starting point for making your website accessible. Simple measures, like using high-contrast font and avoiding blinking or flashing graphics, are key. An experienced website design and development team can incorporate WCAG and other measures to ensure that your website is accessible.

Third, while branding is important, a medical website’s focus should be on functionality. If a patient visits the website, they should be easily able to find what they need and do what they need to do - such as make a payment, schedule an appointment, or find out more information.

Fourth, the website's overall design should be clean, attractive, and consistent with the practice’s branding. It should also be optimized for mobile so that users can visit the site and use it properly from a laptop, phone, or tablet.

A medical website might also include many other elements, such as the ability to translate content into different languages, a video library, and a good search function. The award-winning website designers and developers at Inclind can help you consider various options and create a website that is beautiful, secure, and effective.

Top 15 Medical Website Designs

Whether you are starting from scratch or redesigning an existing website, deciding how your medical website should look and what it should include can be challenging. Below, we have put together a list of some of our favorite medical sites to help you get started.

Tidal Health

Tidal Health is one of our own designs here at Inclind. First, directly on the home page, users will find buttons that take them directly to four popular areas of the website, such as finding a doctor or getting immediate care. There is also a bar across the top with the latest news. Two circular buttons at the bottom of the screen remain there as users scroll. The button on the left is for accessibility options, while the calendar button on the right takes visitors to the appointments page.

Mercy Health

Mercy Health uses bold colors and a large box for its search bar. Instead of relegating the search function to the top of the page (where it also resides!), the search bar is front and center. Mercy Health also has a chatbot feature, which can be used to guide visitors to the proper information.

Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic is renowned for its state-of-the-art medical care. Its website spotlights this reality, with a video (that can be paused if it’s distracting) of scientific scenes, and content that asks visitors to learn more about how the hospital drives innovation. The Mayo Clinic also has an extensive health library, with plainly explained information on symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment for a range of conditions.

Rest Assured

If someone you love is elderly or disabled, you may struggle with how to ensure that they are safe. Rest Assured is a medical company that offers remote monitoring technology for two groups of people: seniors and people with disabilities. Its website offers several easy ways to get the information that you need based on each group. In this way, users don’t have to waste time stumbling through a website to find the right options for their loved one.

Trust Care

Trust Care is a medical care center that offers specialized services and memberships. Its website features a clean design and a good use of its brand colors. The drop-down menus allow visitors to easily find exactly the information they need, from locations and hours to services for employers.

UPMC

The UPMC website features bright, bold colors with its signature color - purple - for the areas of the website that are most often visited. There is also a news alert across the top of the screen, along with a button at the top left that allows users to connect instantly via telephone. That option is a great way to ensure that it is easy to find a phone number - particularly for people who don’t feel comfortable with a live chat or booking an appointment online.

Centura Health

Centura Health’s website feels warm and friendly - which is appropriate given its tagline of “humankindness.” The colors are welcoming, and the font is “soft,” without harsh lines. Centura Health also uses simple graphic illustrations to lead visitors to key areas of the website, such as ER/Urgent Care and Clinics.

Rush Medical

Rush Medical’s website is simple yet effective. It uses green to highlight important information, such as the “schedule your appointment” button, a link to “get care today,” and the menu bar along the top. It also includes a prominent search bar that can be used to search by location as well as keyword.

Cleveland Clinic

The Cleveland Clinic is a leader in healthcare. Its website is a great example of how minimalist design can work really well. Rather than lots of words and buttons, the website keeps it simple. There is a chat box if you want to talk to someone immediately. Otherwise, visitors can check one of the menu bars at the top of the screen to get to where they need to go easily. Like the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic also has a comprehensive health library that is incredibly helpful.

IU Health

IU Health uses a simple layout and large type to make it easy to navigate its website. There are multiple calls to action (CTA) along the top of the screen, including an option to log into the patient portal. As you scroll down the screen, a calendar of events puts the focus on how IU Health is truly invested in the community.

Northwestern Medicine

Northwestern Medicine uses the university’s signature purple color to help its website stand out from the crowd. It also highlights its awards front and center - plus important updates along the top. There are several locations where users can click to search the website. Two menu bars make it easy for visitors to find what they need.

One Medical

One Medical is Amazon’s medical service. Its website is very well-designed and attractive, with a large photo on a blue background taking up most of the home page. A bright yellow button leads visitors to Amazon to sign up for a membership. Drop-down menus along the top encourage users to learn more - or to sign up.

MedExpress

MedExpress knows that people visit when they are in immediate need of medical care. The website uses location services to tell users the two closest offices to them so that they can make a more informed choice about where to go (quickly!). Visitors can click on these centers to schedule an in-person or virtual appointment to reduce wait times even further.

Texas Children’s

Texas Children’s does something smart on its website. Like many hospitals, it has a number of affiliated centers - so it puts a menu directly on the right side of the home page so visitors can navigate directly to the medical practice that they need (or its health plan). When users click on the bright red “I want to” button, a menu pops up on the right side of the screen with options.

Massachusetts General Hospital

The Massachusetts General Hospital website is a great example of how color can be used to lead visitors to certain areas. It utilizes a bright yellow/green to draw attention to a few key areas - buttons to find a doctor, appointments and referrals, treatments, and the search bar. Along the top, simple content allows users to look furtherinto what they need.
